The government is contemplating substantially stepping up efforts to support a regional substitute for Google’s language translation services. This year, the government launched the “Bhashini” platform, and only lately, it was included to its plans for expanding Digital India, which have a budget of Rs 14,903 crore.

Bhashini bills itself as a ‘AI-enabled’ multilingual translation tool; it presently supports 10 important Indian languages and, with government backing, will eventually handle all 22 recognized Indian languages. The government’s larger National Language Translation Mission includes this effort.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-145675″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/theindiaprint.com-chandrayaan-3-success-next-stop-for-isro-office-pm-after-greece-roadshow-likely-in-bengaluru-images-2023-08-25t172839.040.jpg” alt=”theindiaprint.com chandrayaan 3 success next stop for isro office pm after greece roadshow likely in bengaluru images 2023 08 25t172839.040″ width=”1322″ height=”880″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/theindiaprint.com-chandrayaan-3-success-next-stop-for-isro-office-pm-after-greece-roadshow-likely-in-bengaluru-images-2023-08-25t172839.040.jpg 275w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/theindiaprint.com-chandrayaan-3-success-next-stop-for-isro-office-pm-after-greece-roadshow-likely-in-bengaluru-images-2023-08-25t172839.040-150×100.jpg 150w” sizes=”(max-width: 1322px) 100vw, 1322px” title=”Bhashini: A Major Government Push for the Desi 'Google Translator' 9″>

How would Bhashini behave?

The Bhashini platform seeks to make the internet accessible to everyone in all 22 Indian languages, even though its main concentration is on seamless language translation. This platform, which is based on technologies like machine translation, automated voice recognition, optical character recognition, text to speech, and more, primarily intends to assist Indians in obtaining search results and using the internet in a language that is most natural to them. In other words, for Indians who want to use the internet, understanding English won’t be a barrier.

Online government services and applications do, without a doubt, currently provide the opportunity to browse in the primary Indian languages, but there is still a sizable vacuum that has to be filled. Due to the unreliability of translation services for all Indian languages, English still has a little advantage. You may expect to obtain real-time translation from Hindi to Telugu or even Bengali to Manipuri thanks to Bhashini’s goal of providing services for translation between various Indian languages.

The platform aims to unite startups, IT firms, publications, colleges, and even people with state and federal government players. Anuvaad is a program that assists with both text and voice translation at the moment.

During the G20 Digital Economy Working Group Ministers Meeting, PM Narendra Modi recently unveiled the Bhashini platform to highlight India’s potential as a testing ground for technological innovation. The prime minister said, “Bhashini is a platform for AI-powered language translation. It will promote digital inclusion in all of India’s many languages.

As part of the government’s aspirations to expand Digital India, the National Knowledge Network (NKN), which links 1,787 educational institutions, is also being modernized. In addition, it is emphasizing the value of cybersecurity by include cyber-awareness classes for the 12 crore college students.

Bhashini is now considering developing a “unifying architecture” in order to develop a contributory community that uses a “unified approach.” While the portal will provide translation services, users will also be able to input local slang information to help the service become even better.
