<p>After being selected for the squad for this month’s friendlies, Gio Reyna of Borussia Dortmund will reunite with United States national team coach Gregg Berhalter for the first time since their nasty public argument.</p>

<p>During the World Cup in Qatar last year, Reyna and Berhalter got into a heated argument that put Berhalter’s job as coach of the US national team in jeopardy.</p>
<p>An inquiry into a 1991 confrontation between Berhalter and his wife, who was then his girlfriend, and Reyna also became entangled in the disagreement, as did Reyna’s parents.</p>
<p>The coach was exonerated after the federation’s investigation and ultimately re-hired as USA coach in June. His contract expired at the end of 2022.</p>
<p>Reyna missed those games because of an injury, but Berhalter took over again for friendlies against Oman and Uzbekistan in September.</p>
<p>Since then, the two have spoken, and Berhalter acknowledged that although their video conversation went well, more work has to be done on their relationship.</p>
<p>“I’d say the exchange was constructive. I truly simply wanted to express my appreciation for the talk while also accepting that I believe it will take some time,” he stated.</p>
<p>So, he responded, “I believe that even though it could take some time, I think we’re both in agreement with what we want to achieve.</p>
<p>Reyna is recovering from an injury and hasn’t played for Dortmund yet this year, so Berhalter advised caution when using him.</p>
<p>Tyler Adams, a crucial member of Berhalter’s central midfield, will be sidelined due to an injury sustained while playing for Bournemouth in the Premier League.</p>
<p>Their new coach Julian Nagelsmann, who took over for Hansi Flick, who was fired after a 4-1 friendly defeat to Japan at home, will make his or her debut against Germany.</p>
<p>Berhalter, a former player in Germany for 1860 Munich and Energie Cottbus, said that he anticipated Nagelsmann to have an immediate influence.</p>
<p>I am aware that Julian’s ability to communicate these concepts to his team in three days will be intriguing to see.</p>
<p>“But, you know, that’s part of the challenge of playing international soccer, and he’s a bright guy, a bright coach, so I’m sure he’s going to pick it up really fast,” he said.</p>
