Despite having 35 fifers, spin master Ravi Ashwin remembers his finest spells at 100 Tests

Ravichandran Ashwin is about to wear his 100th Test cap when he plays in the fifth Test between India and England at Dharamsala. Since the Men in Blue played their first Test in 1932, the Indian spin specialist will become the 14th Indian to appear in 100 or more Test matches.
One of the greatest spinners of all time is Ashwin, according to many. His accomplishments bear witness to that. With more than 500 Test wickets, the 37-year-old Indian is the second-best in history. With ten Player of the Series victories, he leads all Indian winners. Ashwin is the only Indian player with 35 Test wickets.

Nevertheless, Ashwin has remembered his greatest spells, which did not feature any of the 35 fifers he has taken in the format, as he prepares to play in his milestone game. Rather than that, he listed three spells for which he did not choose a five.

Each of the three is from 2017 or 2018. The first occurred during Australia’s Test match in Bengaluru in 2017. India was bowled out for 189 in the first innings of the second Test, having already lost the previous one. Though he picked up a six-for-two in the second inning, Ashwin considered his first-inning performance of 49-13-84-2 to be among his finest.

The other two were at Centurion in the following year and Edgbaston later in 2018. In the Edgbaston Test, he scored 3 for 59, and in Centurion, 4 for 133.

“When you’re done, test victories are what truly stick out. But after much consideration, I think the stint I bowled in Birmingham in 2018 was among my best ever. On the third day, in the morning, I grabbed three wickets. Cook, Root, and Jennings were mine. In the match, I secured seven wickets. Though it didn’t work out, I thought I had bowled India to victory in the match. When questioned about his greatest spells, he said, “That has to be one of the finest spells I have bowled.”

“I bowled a period on day two morning in a test in Bangalore, but it wasn’t for much reward. And the first day of the 2018 match versus South Africa in Centurion. I received a four-for. Though it didn’t happen, it may have been six or seven. That spell worked well. Those three periods will be particularly noticeable. Over the years, many five-fors and victories have occurred, but these are the spells that will stick in my memory because of how [the ball] left my hand and the personal significance they had for me,” he said.

Ashwin is getting ready for the fifth Test as India enters the match with a commanding 3-1 lead. Ashwin and India would be in heaven if they won 4-1.
