<p>For his portrayal of the man who invented the atomic bomb in Christopher Nolan’s popular biopic “Oppenheimer,” Cillian Murphy won his first Academy Award.</p>

<p>As a first-time candidate, Murphy’s outstanding performance as J. Robert Oppenheimer earned him the best actor award. The movie recounts the events leading up to and including July 16, 1945, when Oppenheimer and his colleagues at Los Alamos would test the bomb without knowing what would happen.</p>
<p>For “Rustin,” Colman Domingo defeated Bradley Cooper; Paul Giamatti defeated Murphy for “The Holdovers”; and Jeffrey Wright defeated Murphy for “American Fiction.”</p>
<p>Despite being a consistent feature in over two decades of Nolan films, the Irish actor had always played a supporting role. Nolan wanted him to take the lead this time.</p>
<p>“He just said, in his very English way, ‘Listen, I wrote this script, it’s about Oppenheimer.’” He is extremely modest and self-deprecating. Last year, Murphy, 47, said to The Associated Press, “I’d like you to be my Oppenheimer.” “It was an amazing day.”</p>
<p>Murphy is aware that he is not a good fit for every movie, and there are some that he is.</p>
<p>“I’ve always told Chris, both in public and in private, that if you want me in a movie and I’m available, I’m there. The magnitude of the role doesn’t really matter to me,” he said the previous year. However, I must admit that I was secretly itching to play a lead for him.</p>
<p>After winning prizes at the BAFTA Film Awards, SAG Awards, and Golden Globes, Murphy was a serious candidate going into the Academy Awards.</p>
